The Mount Vernon Central School District announced the arrest and ban in a statement released on Thursday, May 11, in which officials outlined that the staff member had allegedly taken part in inappropriate interactions with an elementary school student in Mount Vernon.
Once the district became aware of these allegations, they then "took immediate steps" to advise the staff member that he is banned from being on any school district property until the matter can be "fully investigated and appropriate next steps can be determined," officials said in the statement.
The staff member, whose name and position were not released by the district, was also told that if he is found on any school property during the investigation, he will be subject to another arrest for trespassing.
Officials said that security staff in all of the district's buildings have been alerted to the ban.
According to the district, the staff member alleged to have engaged in the misconduct was fingerprinted and cleared for employment by the State Education Department before his full-time employment began in November 2022.
Officials said that the district would fully cooperate with law enforcement in the matter.
"Please know that, as always, the health, safety, and welfare of our students and staff has been and will continue to be our highest priority," district officials said, adding that further updates would be provided when possible and "legally appropriate."
